What is Stigma?

The Merrian-Webster dictionary defines Stigma as, a mark of disgrace or infamy. Now a prevalent example I can think of is, let’s say you do drugs and you don’t tell your friends because you’re afraid of how you will be judged, either positively or negatively.

The Stigma behind Mental health would be you having a mental health disorder and you being scared to come out because you fear how society will judge you. In order for us to move forward we must break this Stigma. Ways we can do this is create awareness, educate and recognize depression as a terminal illness.

Why do we need to create awareness and educate, simply because many people don’t know that mental health is as big of a problem as it is. They don’t know that 1 in 4 people will struggle with mental health and people need to know this is so important. It pains me to hear that tens of thousands of people lose their beautiful lives because of a Stigma.

Society needs to recognize depression as a terminal illness. Depression kills it has killed many people and will continue to kill many people.

I challenge you to go out there and inform people and break the stigma. To break the stigma we have to see communities come together and love everyone because without each other we have nothing. If you’d like to know more please contact me at [email protected]
