35 Minutes a Day

Thirty-five minutes of walking a day can reduce the risk of early death.

Exercise also does wonders for your mental health. To quote Legally Blond, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy.” Though it may seem easy to get 35 minutes of walking in during the day, many of us don’t. Perhaps you work a desk job for eight hours a day and when you get home you simply want to lie on the couch and watch tv. However, the more sedentary your life becomes, the more at risk you are for major health problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity. So below I have listed out a few different ways to make sure you get in your 35 minutes of walking per day.

  • Vacuum the house - if it takes 15 minutes, do it twice, I'm sure it could probably use it.

  • In between binging episodes on your favorite streaming service, walk around the block until you reach 35 minutes.

  • Walk the mall on your lunch break.

  • Park at the back of the lot for a grocery store run.

  • Walk the track at your gym.

  • Make it a date - find a snowy place in the woods to take pictures, you usually have to walk a bit to get to the most scenic places.

  • Schedule a call with your mom while you walk outside. You won’t even notice the effort it takes.

  • Plan a playlist and don’t stop walking until all the songs have played. Here’s a suggested playlist ringing in at 37 minutes with the sweet notes of James Taylor lending itself to the perfect cool down:

    • Walking on Sunshine - Katrina & the Waves - 3:59

    • These Boots are Made for Walkin’ - Nancy Sinatra - 2:46

    • I’m Ganna Be (500 Miles) - The Proclaimers - 3:39

    • Walk Like an Egyptian - The Bangles - 3:25

    • Walk This Way - Run-D.M.C - 5:09

    • Walk Like a Man - Four Seasons - 2:18

    • You’ll Never Walk Alone - Gerry & the Peacemakers - 2:39

    • Walking on Broken Glass - Annie Lennox - 4:13

    • I Walk the Line - Johnny Cash - 2:57

    • Baby Elephant Walk - Henry Mancini - 2:43

    • Walking Man - James Taylor - 3:33
