Social Fitnessing

If you are like me, you have probably received emails in the past few weeks from every company you have ever been in contact with. Many of them I simply send to my trash folder, but I did come across one from my gym the other day that caught my eye. It was titled “Social Fitnessing”. I thought it was a rather clever play on words and also rather ironic because it suggests the exact opposite of social distancing. But, you can “social fitness” without actually getting together. So here are a few suggestions on how to get your workout in at home while also staying in contact with other people.

Go for a walk and wave to your neighbors

If you have neighbors like mine, they are probably out working in their yards and would enjoy a friendly wave and a hello.

Zoom a workout with a friend

If your workout is less than 40 mins, you could share your screen with your friends on zoom and do the workout together, each from your own living rooms.

Agree to send a sweaty workout pic to a friend for accountability

While this isn’t the same as working out together, it does keep you accountable to the promise you made to workout. The social aspect comes in when you encourage each other to keep going. It’s nice to know someone is in it with you.

Create a fitness challenge and tag your friends on Instagram

There are a few fitness challenges floating around right now including 10 pushups, and putting a shirt on from a handstand position. Try creating your own and tag your friends!

Your gym is probably offering a free class online.

If you can join a class online you can actually see when other people are doing it with you with live comments. Even if you don’t personally know these workout buddies, the feeling of camaraderie is still present.
