The Power of Stories. Why Telling Yours Is Good For Mental Wellness

Everyone loves great stories. They inspire, captivate our hearts, and take us on an emotional roller coaster. We fall in love with some characters and despise others. We admire friends who can tell great stories. We learn valuable lessons from childhood to adulthood through stories. Teachers across history have always known that stories are the preferred mode of effective communication.

Lord of the Rings

The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe

Little Women

Cinderella

Hamilton

Harry Potter

The Marvel Cinematic Universe

Jesus

I am confident that these (and so much more) are master stories written by master storytellers. But there is one more that should be on this list.

You.

Your life is a story. Written by a master storyteller. And your story—no matter what it is—should be told.

At RemedyLIVE, we believe in the power of story. We believe that one person’s story can significantly impact the life and story of another. Which is why we spend so much time finding and telling great stories.

These are just a few we decided to highlight this year

One of the scariest things about struggling with our mental health is the overwhelming sense of loneliness, isolation, and shame. We often keep our struggles to ourselves because we are afraid. Afraid that no one will understand and we will be judged. We believe that if we share, things will worsen instead of improving.

But what these stories—and so many others—remind us is that telling our story actually creates community, support, and closer relationships and connects us to the help we need when we are struggling. We learn through the stories of others that despite the feeling of isolation we are, in fact, not alone.

Sharing our stories increases empathy and compassion in others—even strangers.

Research has shown that sharing your story (even if you write it down) positively affects your mental wellness.

Storytelling can even help you to understand yourself better.

So what are you waiting for? Get started today. No, that doesn’t mean you must run to the closest Target and share your entire story with the first stranger you meet. That would be weird. But you can start by grabbing a journal and writing. Tell a story from your childhood or simply what happened yesterday.
