Sharing your time, treasure, and talent
I think I was in high school when I realized that I enjoyed helping people. That is what I would later refer to myself as, “a helper”, and even later yet my enneagram would define me as! Now I know that being a helper actually helps my mental health. It’s good for my soul. Volunteering and helping others gives me purpose and direction. I know that I feel better when I can help. So how can you begin your journey to being a helper? Here are a few ways to get started.
Find a cause
You always want to find a cause that you are passionate about. Maybe it’s children, animals, or mental health. A quick google search in your area can help you find an organization or you can reach out to your local Chamber of Commerce.

Time, Treasure, and/or Talent
What do you have to offer? So many people think about helping an organization in their community and they instantly think about donating money. Although a monetary donation is nice it is not the only way to help! Maybe your local humane shelter is looking for volunteers to come walk the dogs, or your food pantry needs help unloading boxes and putting food away. Also, what are you good at? Do numbers come easily to you? Maybe your local nonprofit needs a board member who can help with their budget. Do you have lots of friends in the community, I bet they could use you for fundraising. Do not let the idea of volunteering scare you because you think it has to be about money.
Get the family involved
Volunteering does not have to be just your activity. There are plenty of ways you can volunteer with your entire family. Spring is here, see if your local community garden needs help preparing its bed for planting. Many communities have Habitat for Humanity builds that everyone can participate in. Create a way to bond with your family in a setting outside your normal ones and create a lot of fun memories.
Volunteering gives us a sense of belonging and boosts our sense of social connections. Helping others increases the release of the feel-good hormone in our brain which helps to alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression. This spring don’t be scared to try something new and look for ways you and your family can volunteer in your community. You will find it rewarding in so many different ways.
