Live on Purpose

Think about the last time you did something really dumb. I mean, really dumb. Why did you do it? When I was in fifth grade, I was obsessed with lighters. For whatever reason, I carried one with me everywhere I went. One day, I was sitting in my classroom, and I suddenly got this brilliant idea to start playing with my lighter under my desk. Now, the desks were arranged in a sort of half-circle, so other students could see what I was doing. One of them promptly raised her hand and ratted me out.

I, of course, denied it.

My teacher, Mr. Thompson, was furious. The look in his eyes was terrifying. After only a few short minutes of interrogation, I admitted my blame. He asked me why I did it. I tried explaining it was an accident. That didn't work. I tried some elaborate story that it was all a misunderstanding. That didn't work either. I eventually explained that I did it on purpose--I thought it would be funny. I was just trying to entertain myself and a few other classmates.

No matter the reasons I tried to give, there was a clear reason I did what I did. Because I wanted to. I thought it would be funny. I wanted to impress my friends. Bottom line: I did it on purpose.

Because just about everything has a purpose. There is a purpose behind misbehavior in our kids. There is a purpose in the jobs we do and the things we learn. There is purpose in the smallest of insects. There might even be a purpose to the weeds in my lawn (but I am not convinced of that just yet). Even in things that seem unexplainable, we can often find purpose.

Purpose can be found everywhere, but most importantly, it's found in our lives--in who we are. Every one of us was created on purpose for a purpose. There is intentionality, reason, and meaning behind who we are and what we do. But for today, when we speak of purpose, let's not focus on what we do for some type of self-help, personal improvement, or the pursuit of happiness, money, or success. Let's not focus on ourselves.

Our purpose on this planet is not just about us. In fact, it's not at all about us. It's more than that. It's about the impact we strive to make in the world, the people we influence, and the mark we leave. Simply put: it's how we choose to love others--on purpose. Everywhere. All the time.

This is how we live a purpose-filled life, on purpose. Seek the good for others first. Find a cause you care about and offer your time and talents. The life you have been given is much less about you than you think. It's more about how you treat those around you. This is life on purpose.

Challenges/Points:

  • Purpose can be found everywhere. Most importantly, it's found in our lives.

  • But our purpose is less about us and more about how we impact the lives of others and love other people.

  • Think about what you care about, your gifts and talents, and consider how you might give those things a purpose that impacts the lives of others.

Questions:

  • How do you see life? Do you see it as purposeful or random?

  • How can you use your gifts and talents to impact the life of another person?

  • Think about all the things you do and the person you are. What purpose can you identify for all of these things?
