Physical Self-Care

Hugging helps your mental health. I’m not joking. Physical touch releases Oxytocin which makes us happier. Hugging can also reduce blood pressure which is good for your heart. It helps lower anxiety and stress. It is amazing that so much of our physical well being is related to our mental well being. The whole body works as one system and we have to take care of that system if we want to function at our greatest capacity. You wouldn’t want to workout your arms and skip leg day altogether, you would soon be disproportionate. So why would you skip taking care of your physical body if you wanted to also take care of your mental health? There are a variety of ways to help improve your physical health.

Stretch

Stretching helps to keep the muscles working properly, even if you don’t exercise every day. You need to stretch your muscles so that when you do need to use them for something important you don’t suffer the consequences of injury.

Drink Water

Drinking water helps everything to function properly in your body. It helps with digestion, circulation, maintaining normal body temperature, absorption of nutrients, and more.

Competition

Sometimes the best way to exercise is when you have a different goal in mind. If you add a bit of competition like winning a basketball game or being the first team to capture a flag, it feels less like work.

Physical stimulus

Your skin and muscles need some love too. Sometimes a hot bath is just what the doctor ordered. The heat from the water will help get the blood flowing and will help the muscles to relax. It can also help loosen stiff joints.
