Photo Books

One of my very favorite parts of Facebook is viewing my memories from years past. My old posts contain photos of my children when they were babies, friends from my college days, and written thoughts that highlight happy memories that I’ve made. They fill me with joy as I think about each day and see the history of my life unfold before me.

Maybe the reason I enjoy this feature so much is that I am a person who gains pleasure from making memories and reflecting on them later. Before I had a facebook account, I accomplished this through the hobby of journaling and scrapbooking. I can’t count the hours of my life that I have spent cutting up and gluing photographs. However, much to my delight, when digital cameras were introduced, and cell phones soon followed (and yes, I realized how much I am aging myself at this point), all our photographs were able to be accessed on a computer. With this came the creation of digital photo books, and it is a hobby I have loved ever since.

It is such a delight to sort through pictures taken on a vacation or an outing with friends and choose which ones will make it into a current photo book and then to write about that memory. Whenever I need a reminder that life is full of beauty, love, and adventure, I need only to pull one of these beloved books off my shelf and spend a half hour reminiscing and realizing there is so much to be grateful for. They are a source of happiness and encouragement because of all the positive messages and experiences that are included in each one.

As a parent, creating photo books has become one way I can pass a legacy of positivity and intentional bonding to each of my children as well. Each year, I make a personalized photo book just for them and fill it with memories and words of hope, while also speaking into their potential. My desire with this is knowing at any time, they can pull one of their special books off the shelf and have a visual reminder of how much they are cherished and loved.

Now, just in case you are thinking that I spend all of my time doing this, I will let you in on a little secret. I make just one photo book a year, and the service I use lets me make digital copies, so when I finish one, it gets turned into separate books for each of my children and myself, with personalized messages before finalizing them. This makes it more manageable while keeping it special for all of us too. I set aside a little bit of time each week to add any new photos or stories, and that keeps it from being an overwhelming task. This is one use of my time that I know will have a lasting and meaningful impact, and I encourage anyone who loves making memories to give it a try.

Challenges/Points:

  • Creating photo books is a good way to be reflective throughout your life and to bless others through words or in sharing memories.

  • Looking through old memories brings a sense of joy and encouragement.

  • There are many photo book websites available, some will even turn your facebook posts into an actual book, give one a try today, it’s not as hard as you may think!

Questions:

  • Do you take lots of photos of your family or friends?

  • What is the difference between storing your photos on your phone or computer and actually having some favorites printed out to look at and keep on hand?

  • How could creating a photo book for someone else be a gift of love? (think friends, siblings, children, parents or grandparents)
