Are You Game?

I was one of those kids who loved playing board or card games. I was also the same kid who hated to lose at Monopoly, but my drive to win eventually led me to learn how to strategize. Playing games is a great way to engage your brain and increase your enjoyment levels. There are so many different kinds of games out there, whether you are looking to involve others or play on your own, my guess is there is a game out there that is just right for you.

Hosting a game night is a great way to welcome others to your home and grow friendships. After deciding on who to invite, you can ask those planning on coming if they have a favorite kind of game they like to play. Some common types are card games, word games, strategy games, big group games such as pictionary or charades, and even physical skill games like Jenga. If you don’t have a lot of options at your own home, you can ask friends to bring their favorite game, or check out your local library to see if they have any to offer. After a game or two is chosen, you are ready for a night of fun.

One of the wonderful things about games is that they appeal to all ages. If you’re involved in a game alongside others, chances are you will be sharing conversations, laughter and making good memories, all things that will lead to endorphins being released in your brain and positive emotions attached to those you are interacting with. Games can be a great bonding tool between friends, parents and children, and even spouses.

Games are beneficial even if played on your own. They can help release tension and aid in growing cognitive skills such as decision making and problem solving. When involved in a game, you are taking your mind off the pressure of your day and directing it to something that often uses your creativity and focus in thoughtful ways. While you can play on an app or other digital device, you can also grab a deck of cards and play a multitude of various solitaire type games whenever you need some screen free time.

The benefits of game playing are so numerous. It can foster inclusion and draw out those with quieter personalities when played in a group setting. Your mind will be growing in developing strategies and thinking skills, and the fun that games offer can help you relax and look at something with a new perspective, which will also assist in reducing stress.

Next time you venture inside a store or do some online shopping, browse through the game selections and you just might be surprised at what you find that appeals to you. If money is an issue, then try doing a web search and you might be amazed at the kinds of games you will find that require no money, just an adventurous spirit!
