Dreams

Do you ever have recurring dreams? You wake up in the middle of the night or the early hours of the morning and remember distinctly what happened in the dream and then you say, oh I have had this dream before, multiple times actually. This happens to me all the time. One dream in particular that I have been having recently is getting locked out of my locker from high school. Now I should tell you that I have already been out of high school for over 10 years, so why does this dream keep coming up and why am I gripped with such terror when I am in the middle of this dream?

I am no dream expert. I don’t pretend to have any knowledge of dream theory or pretend that I have taken a psychology class centered around dreams, I just know what I have been able to process in my own mind. For me, I know that I have some problems with the need to control things and I feel like I must be a master of time. What do I mean by that? Well, I am early to everything. If an event starts at 7:00 I will usually be there by 6:30. I am usually early to being early. In high school I was so afraid of being late for a class that I only visited my locker three times a day, once before my first class, once at lunch, and once at the end of the day. I never wanted to risk taking time to go to my locker in between classes so I just carried all of my material and books for my morning classes in my backpack (enter back problems 4 years later.) So I think in this particular dream, I had visited my locker so few times, that I either forgot where it was located, or the school moved it for me thinking I never used it and forgot to tell me where my new locker was. I don’t think it's too far off to say that our dreams can be our fears personified.

Many people dream of real events that happened to them and it's a form of their PTSD. So dreams are a way for our subconscious brain to try and process the past. We may not want to think of events that happened in the past during our waking hours but our brains need to be able to process in some way. If you find you are having recurring dreams or nightmares, try to see if you can determine why you are having this particular dream? Does it mean something to you? Do you need to process this with a counselor? It could be something that you are repressing and need to get out into the open. Our bodies are smart. They usually send us signals when we are sick or need to know something. Be in-tune with your body and listen to what it is telling you.

Challenges/Points:

  • How often do you dream? Are they always the same or different? What are your dreams telling you?

  • Keep a dream journal so that you can keep track of the dreams you remember once you are awake.

  • Try processing your dreams out loud with a close friend or counselor.

Questions:

  • How often in a week do you remember your dreams?

  • Have you ever told anyone about your dreams?

  • Can you identify things in your past that affect your dreams?
