Author of Your Story

If I’m honest, there are moments when life feels hopeless. You may understand that feeling as well. But looking at my life as a story is the best way I know to turn that feeling around and set things on a better track.

Sometimes we look to the past with sadness and regret. Sometimes we look back and blame certain people for why we are what we are now. Sometimes we beat ourselves up for the dumb choices we made. Sometimes we wish we could go back to certain points and hit a magical restart button.

There may be times in life when you see your current situation, look back at your past, and feel trapped. But instead of simply sitting in the emotions of your past and the pain of the present, try combining these things into your bigger picture, which includes past, present, and future.

Imagine yourself reading a story or watching a movie. You are the protagonist. You know when you pick up a book or watch a movie that, no matter how impossible the situation seems at the beginning, the main character is going to make it out. And they’re not only going to survive; they’re going to shine. They will overcome all odds, grow strong, and be transformed.

With that in mind, go forward.

What is your story? How do you want your story to play out? Be thoughtful. Be creative. Dream big. Pay attention to who is in your life. What impact are they having? Introduce side characters who will help you succeed. Make dialogue you’re proud to speak. Act heroically. Be the change you want to see in your storyline. What are some repeat themes you notice, good and bad? Where have you continually hit the same walls? Are there different approaches you haven’t tried yet?

Rewrite your script.

What are your weaknesses? What are your strengths? What are you going to do about both? How can you use your strengths to your best advantage? Can you identify weaknesses and make steps to change?

You are the author of your story.

The deeper the challenge you faced, or are facing, the more powerful your story will be on the other side when you emerge victorious. And remember, your story isn’t just about you. It isn’t selfish to take your story into your own hands and steer it into something you are proud to tell. It is courageous. Ultimately, when you share your story with others, it is a way to motivate and encourage them. It will give them hope. As they see your story unfold, YOUR life and all the things you overcame will inspire them in endless ways.

Challenges/Points:

  • Instead of looking at your past simply as a source of your problems, try examining it to mold a different present and future.

  • Imagine yourself as the lead character in a movie or book. The bigger the trouble at the start, the more powerful the resolution can be.

  • Draw from your struggles and rewrite your script; be the author of your life’s direction.

Questions:

  • Who are the characters in your story? What kind of influence do they have on you?

  • Are there places you wish you could rewrite your script? What’s stopping you?

  • If you could tell ANY story you wanted with your life, what would it be? Dream big!
