Find Rest through Balance

I want you to take a minute and imagine a world that is in perfect balance. What do I mean by that? I mean everything in its proper place doing precisely what it was meant to do. Nothing out of order, nothing broken, misused, or unpredictable. Imagine a world with no brokenness, no dysfunction, no divorce, no hatred, no racism, etc. You get the idea--perfectly balanced.

Now, for some of you, that idea brings you a sense of hope and calm. But for many more of us, that idea comes with irritation, frustration, and even a sense of defeat. The chaotic nature of the world robs us of our peace and mental stability. We feel that way because we know--even if only intuitively--the world is horribly and dramatically out of balance. And our hearts struggle to find peace and keep things in their proper place--as in, we don’t always think the right thoughts, relate to people the right way, plan our lives in a healthy way, and align our desires with a proper sense of balance.

Our broken world is what continually throws us off balance--we allow the chaos of this world to invade our hearts. It’s not just the demands of school, work, or family that create a lack of balance, it's the lack of balance in our heart. As a result, what are often good and healthy practices or habits are replaced with unhealthy ones. For example, when our lives get chaotic, we eat more junk food, get less sleep, and are short-tempered. We start to focus on things we can’t control--thus creating greater degrees of frustration, lack of sleep, etc. It becomes a vicious cycle that seems impossible to break.

Fixing this broken world may be too tall a task, but we are required to navigate it. We have to figure out a way to not allow the turmoil and brokenness of this world to poison our hearts and minds. Because our hearts are out of balance, our minds become clouded, filled with uncertainty, self-doubt, and lies--basically, chaos ensues.

A balanced heart and a mind that’s at peace will always be a challenge for the vast majority of us. In fact, let’s go ahead and just say, for all of us. But, that doesn’t mean the task is impossible. Where to begin? It starts with a degree of humility and honesty that allows you to admit that you are out of balance and the permission to not allow outside factors to corrupt your heart and mind. This, right here, is why rest is so important. How will you ever have the time and space to take an honest inventory of your heart and mind if your steady stream of daily to-do’s and demands have every waking hour filled? You are risking physical health, relationships, performance, and burnout.

Challenges/Points:

  • Our world is entirely out of balance which means we are too.

  • In a chaotic world, the one thing we can control is ourselves.

  • You need the space and time to rest and take inventory of heart and mind.

Questions:

So today, I want to challenge you to stop for just a few minutes and ask yourself the following questions.

  • Are you known for complaining more than being joyful?

  • Are you patient with the weaknesses of others, as you realize you have your own areas of improvement?

  • Are you concerned more with professional or academic growth than personal or spiritual growth?

If you answered yes to any of these, you are likely out of balance.
