Enjoy a Snow Day

When I was a child, there was a certain kind of day that I always looked forward to during the winter. This day wasn’t planned or a holiday, but instead, it would come as a surprise and was based solely on the weather. A snow day! Yes, seeing the name of our school scroll across the screen of our TV (before cell phones and the internet delivered the news) was an exciting gift, comparable to getting something you really wanted for Christmas. It filled me up with delight, anticipation, and excitement all in one. Bad weather meant great news for a child who really wanted the day off of school!

It was a gift of a whole day. One that I would not have to spend in school waiting for the hours to pass by, but instead, I could go back to sleep, read a favorite book, play a game, go sledding or play in the snow, or just get cozy on the couch with a cup of hot chocolate and a favorite movie to watch. I can still recall the feelings a day like this would bring about very vividly.

Now as an adult, I still have these memories come to mind when I hear that winter weather is on the way, but life now does not slow down in the same way it did back then. However, this doesn’t mean the great parts of a snow day can’t still be recreated in other ways in our lives. When life gets really busy and the work we are doing never seems to have an end, sometimes planning a “snow day” might be the way to go. The good thing is this can happen no matter the weather or season, it just takes a little bit of intentional foresight.

Try scheduling a day off in the middle of the week, and then use it not to get errands done, but to do only those activities that usually get pushed to the side on other days. Maybe make a list of your favorite things to do when life gives you a pause and have it ready for when your chance comes to make those wishes into a reality. Maybe it is enjoying a favorite drink by the fire, reading a book that you have been putting aside, or watching a movie that you love but haven’t seen in years. If the weather is nicer, maybe your list will include a day at the beach, a walk in the park, or just enjoying a quiet afternoon in your own backyard. If taking a day off of work isn’t a possibility, then set aside a normal day off, but put chores on hold, knowing they will always be waiting for you later. The gift of a snow day invites rest, energy, and a return to youthfulness that might refresh your spirits in surprising ways, even invigorating you with new motivation when you return to normal life again.

Challenges/Points:

  • When life gets really busy or you feel like you are stuck in a rut, try scheduling or setting aside a “snow day” full of your favorite activities.

  • A “snow day” could happen in any season - the point is to take a day off of your normal chores and work and to fill it with energizing or life-giving things that you enjoy doing.

  • Sometimes when we are stuck in a busy season, we need a day to refocus our priorities and rediscover the joys that breathe calm back into life.

Questions:

  • Do you feel like your life is in a really busy season right now? Is it possible to plan a day off to do some activities you enjoy?

  • What activities do you love to do but haven’t done in awhile? Could you make a list of these to have ready next time you get a free day?

  • What would you need to plan in advance to make sure your day off doesn’t get filled with only errands, work, or chores?
