Need a New Hobby? Try the Library!

I just came back from one of my favorite places, the library. Sure, call me nerdy if you would like, that is okay with me. The library in my town is one of the most fabulous resources of so many things even beyond all the books it holds. If you’re trying to discover a new hobby or activity, let me tell you why I believe the library is the perfect place to start.

Of course, the most obvious is books - you can find countless books dealing with just about every subject under the sun. Interested in cooking in a new way? Would you like to try out a new art form? How about planning a trip to somewhere you’ve never been? Yep, there is a book for that! Maybe you want to learn something new or just figure out if a certain hobby is going to be worth your time. You will more than likely find someone has written something about it and you can try it risk free by borrowing the book first.

Okay, so maybe books just aren’t your thing, or you feel like you don’t have the time to read. When I was going through a busy season as a first time parent of a young child, I felt like I couldn’t keep up with all I had to get done during the day, and leisure reading time was not going to happen. However, it was then that I discovered audiobooks, and it changed so much about how I spent my days. I would get the joy of listening to something while I did chores or cooked dinner, and it was wonderful. Now, my husband and I will often listen to audiobooks we both enjoy while traveling, and we get them all for free from the library. Along with that, libraries often offer a wide variety of digital services such as music, podcasts, and streaming videos for free as well. The possibilities are truly endless.

But wait, there’s more! My son loves being able to check out the newest video games at the library. This appeals to me as well so we don’t have to spend money on games that may only interest us for a short time. Our library even has board games, which make for some fun times with family and friends as well. Your local library may offer additional services or goods that are unique to your area and you’ll never know for sure until you give it a try.

Maybe you enjoy getting together with others who have things in common. Often libraries will advertise groups that fit a wide variety of interests from clubs for books, writing, poetry, gaming, technology, and more. Be on the lookout for special programs that your library may host as well. I met some great friends while attending story hour with my kids and connecting with other parents.

The library has so much more than just books. Try visiting yours today and you may walk away amazed at the opportunities that are ready to be checked out.

Challenges/Points:

  • Libraries make a great place to start when searching out a new hobby.

  • Beyond a vast array of books, your library may also offer audiobooks, digital services such as music, podcasts or videos, video games, board games and so much more.

  • You may also be able to join certain groups or events to connect with others who may share common interests.

Questions:

  • When was the last time you visited your local library? Is this a resource you utilize often, why or why not?

  • Do you know all the options that your library has to offer? If not, could you try searching their website or asking a librarian?

  • What is something you are currently interested in that you could try out or learn more about by checking out a resource from your library?
