Don't Look At, Look Through

During the late 1990s, posters called autostereograms were all the rage. They were the crazy 3-D posters you had to stare at to see a particular image jump off the page. They were captivating, mesmerizing, and for some--frustrating. Were you supposed to focus deeper into the picture or somehow lose your focus altogether? It was this incredible magic trick of taking a two-dimensional picture; if you looked through the photo, your eyes could see a hidden three-dimensional image.

The trick was to look beyond what was on the page. To see the hidden image, you had to look through it. And when you saw the picture, you knew there was more than just the two-dimensional image--a truly revelatory and even spiritual experience.

Finding the hidden image in an autostereogram was all a matter of perspective. I believe the same principle applies to our life's circumstances. It's a matter of perspective. Instead of looking at your circumstances, look through them. It's there you will find something hidden, something better, some more captivating and unforgettable. Because it's not just a matter of what we see, it's also how we see.

Let me explain.

The thoughts you have most--the thoughts that dominate your everyday life and activity--are generally the thoughts that will move you in any given direction. If you tend to think negative thoughts, that bad things will happen, or that you're a terrible person etc., your life will move in that direction. Conversely, the opposite is true.

When our circumstances in life are not the greatest, it's easy to focus on the negative. As we look at the situation, we see only the surface--what's right in front of us. We don't see beyond it. We don't see through the situation. If you do this, don't feel bad. We all do. It's a default setting we have to fix. Getting past the negative means seeing through your situation to the positive.

So the next time life looks terrible on the surface, try this simple little exercise that will help you see the hidden 3-D image in your life. Find three positives and say them out loud, tell them to a friend or family member. Instead of allowing yourself to focus on the negative, make the conscious decision to see right through it to the positives. While simple positive thinking won't make a bad situation magically disappear, it will put the situation in its proper perspective.

Yes, literally count your blessings. If you're going to spend any energy counting what's wrong, you better spend some time counting what's right.

Challenges/Points:

  • The thoughts that dominate your time and energy will eventually move your life in that direction.

  • What we see is often a matter of perspective or how we see.

  • Instead of looking at your circumstances, look through your circumstances to the bigger picture and find the positives.

Questions:

  • What struggles are you facing today?

  • How are you allowing negative thoughts to crowd and cloud your perspective?

  • What are at least three blessings or positives about your life right now?
